Admiral Arthur Brooks on "Arctic Awareness"
November 19, 2007
Coast Guard Admiral Arthur Brooks talks about the new "Arctic Awareness" mission and the impact it might have on global stability. Is the North Pole the next battleground? And will Canada be an adversary?

I wouldn't worry about Canada as an adversary. They like to make noises like they are a power. but their population is about that of California and they have a "hobby" military.

All I can remember about this, thanks to old age, is how the Democratic Congress of the United States refused to address America's need for fuel independance, and decided not to drill in Alaska. At the time, I said that with our luck, due to the HOR's refusal to act responsably, that Russia would probably claim the Arctic as their own, and steal our oil. Looks like I was correct. Afteral, Russia is only 3 miles from the USA, if you look at the map of the region. Once again, the USA will suffer to a liberal congress who has no vision for the American people, or a view of the "big picture." How Sad.

Dan Dolan's comments about Canada's Forces being a 'hobby military’, reminds me of the mind set that ran through the 'War Hawks' and their motto of '54'40 or fight' back in 1812. And what did that get us? Besides Washington and other cities sacked, and a large loss of life! His comments leads one to believe he has never work along side the Canadian military, and I would assume by his statements he probably does not have a military background. A quick look a map shows the Northwest Passage well inside the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Any talk of being international waters is just inane. It would be the same as saying the passages between the Hawaiian and Aleutian Islands is international waters. Canada needs to control it, their main fear is a constant flow of third world shipping dumping their garbage and bilge water into the Passage. Even the former U.S. Ambassador agrees! The former U.S. ambassador to Canada, Paul Cellucci, said that he agreed with the Canadian position. "It is in the security interests of the United States that it be under the control of Canada," he said at a conference in Ottawa." So let's get real about this, it's part of Canada. Let's stop this latest version of 'Manifest Destiny' and concentrate on more realistic and important matters!

OK, first off, I can't see where Canida has or is eaven willing or able to use thier "military" against any other country let alone a great country as the United States is and will always be. The war that we have to worry about as Americans is the war thats brewind up from Mexico over power and the right to sell drugs to Americans. We see it every day in the news about how the law enforcement is always finding drugs, weapons, ammunitions, and last but not least, more and more Mexicans here in America. It isn't going to be the U.S. military forces thats going to have to fight them against our people "real Americans" loosing thier lives in one way or another or for us to loose our freedome just like the African Americans did during slavery days. We all knew it was wrong but we didn't have to try to take over another country to live in because we didn't want to live in our own country instead of fixing it up the way they want it. That's the way that the Mexicans are saying "it is" in Mexico just to take over another country without even using thier "military forces" to do the job. We as True Americans which most have either served our country or are parents, spouses, or dependants are not going to just stand by and let them do it even though the government will try to force us to do.

I saw on a television program where the United States is competing for oil deposits in the Arctic with several countries to include Canada and Russia. I found that the United States has two icebreakers but Russia has twelve. The idea is Russia has better opportunity to claim ownership of whatever valuable property lies there. Oh well.

In my opinion, it would be more beneficial for Americans to stay in North and South America; and, to get all of our natural resources from within our American hemisphere. America should STOP trying to police the entire world.

I was a Coastie in Detroit years ago, and from what I saw of the Canadian Coast Guard (and Air Force), we shouldn't worry....

I am so amazed at some of the comment I have read here...
I wonder why Canadian troops serve along us when I read crap like that from 'Bob', 'Daniel Dolan' and 'Lewis Eymer'. Mu husband spent 17 years in SOCOM with most of it in the Ranger Regiment. Some of his best friends are Canadian soldiers, he and his buddies are pretty open about who they want to serve beside in combat and that is the Canadians. I have them over here all the time and they are a very professional and unassuming group. Well mannered and very straight forward. I can see why my husband and his soldiers want th Canadians next to them. Oh anyone here of Afghanistan? Those guys securing one of the biggest Taliban strongholds? CANADIANS!! Do you guys have a clue about anything? Stop spouting your bar theories and maybe lift your heads out out your a$$es.
What an insult to all those Canadian family who have lost love ones for our GWOT!
You owe them an apology!
Sometimes I am so ashamed to be an American.
